Breaking and Mending

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Last night I took the cover off my eMac and blew around a bit to clean the dust out, and added some more memory and put the computer back together. After finding out that the random wire with a connector on it that we didn’t attatch to anything was infact the thing that makes it all work, and another mini disection I switched it on and found out that a) the computer was faster (good) and b) the screen was a wash of pretty colours (bad).

The problem didn’t make the computer unusable – it would have just made it difficult to do anything that needs graphics – which means that the two things I mostly use this computer for – photo mainipulation and watching dvds – would have major problems.

So I spent all night thinking and came up with a cunning plan. I would buy a cheap pink old style iMac, rip out the brains and replace it with the brains from my eMac. Working on the assumption that the screen is a self contained unit, and it’s the screen that’s broken, my cunning plan should have worked. So, I decided to get up and look for a website that would tell me if my cunning plan was possible.

I switched my eMac on and it’s working perfectly.

The computer mending faries must have been in the night.

I’m trying to make a business card to hand out to people, with bits of information, where the book can be brought, that kind of thing, but am struggling. I’m not sure WHY i’m struggling but I am. I’ve got a nice picture on the front, combining the photo on the front cover and the title and my name, and then two quotes on the back and “holy darkness is out at Greenbelt 2007 and can be brought at www.proost.com” I then want to write “Sophie’s online home is blah…but I don’t have a sutible (ie. one my family can see) website. So, I’ll have to get a website, then write the cards. Which means I need to find my techy savvy housemate, who doesn’t appear to be in….

The main reason I want a website is so that I can use it to plug my latest project – a CD of images for use in worship, or where ever the hell…It’s only at the planning, photo taking stage, but if I’m plugging one thing I may aswell plug the other.

A less book centered post will appear at some point soon – it’s in the process of being written.

I keep saying yes to things. Sometimes before I hear what they are, often before I fully consider the consequences. A couple of weeks ago I went to a SCM gathering in Sheffield. After a fun trip getting down there in the middle of the wettest June on record (luckily before the flooding) I had a fantastic weekend, where I found my dream job and got two new geeky books (Thanks wood!). I also had this conversation with the editor of movement which went something like this :

editor : Sophs, will you do something for me?
sophs : Yes
editor : You don’t know what it is yet
sophs : But I’ll probably say yes anyway. What is it?
editor : Will you write an article about reading “Left Behind”?
sophs : Yeah sure.

So, at some point in the near future I’m going to be reading the series and then blogging about how it makes me feel, and editing the blog into an article. Which means I’ve spent ages asking everyone I know if they have any of the books (so far I have seven and eight).

I sometimes wonder why I let myself into things…
